We work with communities and partners to improve the quality of life through the provision of decent, affordable housing, and encourage the development of community self-reliance and self-sustainability, while at all times considering local customs and values.
Decent housing is the key to producing sustainable communities and neighbourhoods of pride, where people live healthier lives, and children can grow up in positive learning environments.
We run innovative programmes that help people build, renovate or repair their homes. Under funding schemes such as Save and Build, communities can work together to build their homes in stages. New, low-cost technologies enable people to build stronger, more durable homes using materials that they can make themselves. The introduction of composting toilets, specialised rain collection tanks and smokeless stoves help improve family health while minimising the impact on the environment.
We believe a holistic approach is essential if we are to make long-term progress in the fight against housing poverty. We use our programmes to help raise awareness and cultivate a sense of social responsibility. HFHV's education and training courses help young people get the skills and knowledge to be able to find work, and provide a source of sustainable income for the organisation. We also run courses to help empower women, by teaching them construction techniques, business planning, and governance and leadership skills.
HFHV works with other organisations to maximise the impact and reach of its mission. With our strategic partners, we are developing programmes to improve economic opportunities on the different islands of the archipelago, so as to help stem the tide of young people coming to urban areas in search of work – one of the main factors fuelling the growth of housing poverty in Vanuatu.
